History of Labor Day

The first recorded celebration took place on September 5, 1882, in New York. The event was organized by the Central Labor Union and brought together thousands of workers who took part in a parade through the streets of Manhattan. The idea quickly began to spread. During the 1880s, various states began recognizing Labor Day through local laws and measures. Oregon became the first to pass a state law related to the celebration in 1887, followed by other states.
Federal recognition came several years later. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed legislation making the first Monday in September a national holiday. By then, numerous states had already added the date to their calendars.
Over time, Labor Day took on new forms of celebration. Parades organized by workers and labor unions were joined by family gatherings, recreational activities, and community events. Despite these changes, the date remains closely connected to the history of the American labor movement.

Who Founded Labor Day?
The answer is not entirely definitive, as two 19th-century labor leaders are associated with the origins of the celebration: Peter J. McGuire and Matthew Maguire.
Peter J. McGuire, a labor leader and one of the founders of the American Federation of Labor, is traditionally recognized as one of the main figures behind Labor Day. In 1882, he proposed establishing an annual day dedicated to workers and suggested holding a parade followed by activities for families.
Matthew Maguire also holds an important place in this history. The labor leader, who was serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union of New York at the time, has been identified by later research as the person who may have originally proposed creating the holiday.
The historical debate between the two names continues because of the records available from that period. While McGuire was recognized for decades as the founder of Labor Day, later documents and accounts gave greater prominence to Maguire.
Regardless of who first proposed the initiative, both men were connected to the labor movement that helped organize the first celebration in New York in 1882.
