- Colonization by aquatic macroinvertebrates on two substrates in a stream of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombiael julio 26, 2024 a las 11:03 pm
The aquatic macroinvertebrates that inhabit lotic ecosystems are ecologically important because they are the most abundant and diverse of these systems; however, ecological processes such as the colonization they conduct have been poorly studied in the Neotropical region. The aim of this work was to study the colonization process by aquatic macroinvertebrates on natural and artificial substrates during periods of drought and rain in the middle part of the Gaira River (Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta). Ceramic plates were installed as artificial substrate and stones as natural substrate, theses were exposed for one, two, eight, 16, 24, 32 and 41 days to natural colonization by aquatic macroinvertebrates. The differences between substrates and between seasons were evaluated according to the density, abundance, and richness of invertebrates. During the colonization processes, no significant differences between substrates were detected in the structure of the macroinvertebrate communities (ANOSIM, P > 0.05, R = 0.015) but between climatic seasons (ANOSIM, P < 0.05, R = 0.267). The greatest abundance and richness occurred during the drought period. The most abundant taxa were the genera Simulium, Heterelmis, Baetodes, Anacroneuria, Leptohyphes, and the Orthocladiinae subfamily. The richness of genera was higher in the rainy season for natural substrates (49 taxa). This study showed that the flow is a key factor that moderates the colonization processes and the structure of the communities of aquatic macroinvertebrates on natural and artificial substrates in the middle part of a Neotropical river.
- Defensive Behavior in Rhinella bergi and Rhinella mirandaribeiroi (Anura: Bufonidae)el julio 26, 2024 a las 11:03 pm
ABSTRACT Here we report two cases of defensive behavior known as "stiff-legged", unprecedented for the species Rhinella bergi and R. mirandaribeiroi. We registered the behavior at localities in Mato Grosso do Sul and Minas Gerais states, Brazil. With our records, there are now five species from open areas that exhibit this behavior. We assume that the species that inhabit these areas exhibit this avoiding predation behavior simulating a dead body on the ground, behavior known as "death feigning", unlike forest species, which use this strategy to camouflage themselves between the leaves.RESUMEN Reportamos aquí dos casos de comportamiento defensivo conocido como "stiff-legged", sin precedentes para las especies Rhinella bergi y R. mirandaribeiroi.

In this advance of the taxonomic revision of the genus Quararibea (Malvaceae), a new species known only from the cloud forests of the region of Ngabe-Buglé, in the Central Cordillera of Panama, is described. Its morphology and distribution are compared and commented to those of Quararibea santaritensis, Q. yunckeri, Q. cryptantha, Q. nigrescens and other species from Central and South America, here considered related. A key to identify the commented species and a list of their revised collections is also provided.
- Architecture plant analysis for insectivorous birds in a Colombian Neotropical dry forestel julio 26, 2024 a las 11:03 pm
In a degraded ecosystem, which is currently under restoration, detailed analysis of their vegetation structure and descriptions of its association with bird species are very useful for its habitat management. Architecture analysis is a visual method for describing vegetation and plant structure as result of their growth strategy. Based on this method, habitat offer for three insectivorous bird species Myrmeciza longipes (White-bellied Antbird), Thamnophilus doliatus (Barred Antshrike), and Synallaxis albescens (Pale-breasted Spinetail) was analyzed as part of their population analysis and habitat quality evaluation in a fragment of tropical dry forest of 11 079 hectares, Huila, Colombia. By mean of counts and also through the secondary information collected, we gauged how these bird species use the different vegetation strata. Taking into account that trees with more perches increase insectivorous birds' forage that more perches built on more bird's refuges and also that more crossing perches make up more forks for these species' nests. In 186 plots of a tropical dry forest zone we determined that the area was dominated by seven architecture models which were divided into three groups according to their potential offer of habitat resources for the three species: 1) architectural models Roux, Petit, and Pervost that offer high quality 2) architectural models Noriba and Nozerán with intermediate quality; and 3) architectural models Mc Clure and Hottum, with very low quality.
