- Morpho-agronomic and molecular comparison of fourteen varieties of rice (Oryza sativa) with the lines that gave them the originel marzo 28, 2024 a las 6:01 pm
This research aimed to determine the morpho-agronomic, grain quality, and molecular differences between 14 rice varieties and their ancestors. These rice varieties from Latin America were tested for 25 variables in a randomized complete block design with 28 genotypes, two planting dates, and three replications. The molecular analysis was done using an array of 96 SNP markers with a high discrimination capacity for Indica rice. A combined statistical analysis was done because there were no statistical differences between the planting dates. Also, molecular, morpho-agronomic, and grain quality data were analyzed together, using the Gower index to generate a similarity matrix. Agronomic and molecular data were analyzed both, together and independently, through the SAS program. Results showed that eight varieties were grouped with their respective ancestor, and one variety was grouped with a sibling of their ancestor and was consistent in all the analyses. However, given the wide heterozygosity found within the varieties, distinctive genetic profiles could not be established; the varieties must be purified to establish their genetic footprint.
- The total water hardness affects molting, calcification, growth and survival of Cryphiops caementarius (Palaemonidae)el marzo 28, 2024 a las 6:01 pm
The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of different levels of total hardness on the molting, calcification of exoskeleton, growth and survival of Cryphiops caementarius prawn. Male prawns were collected from Pativilca river (Lima, Peru) and cultivated in individual containers inside aquariums (55 L). Four levels of the total hardness of water (100, 200, 300 and 400 mg CaCO3 L-1) were used, with three repetitions, respectively. Prawns cultured in water with hardness of 300 mg L-1 has a shorter molting period (26.7 days) and a higher frequency of molts (three molts). The calcium content of the prawn exoskeleton increased (p < 0.05) from 25 to 31 % in water with hardness of 100 and 400 mg L-1, respectively. The greatest thickness of the exoskeleton (144 |jm cephalothorax and 131 |jm abdomen) was obtained in water with a hardness of400 mg L-1 and the smallest thickness (93 |jm in the cephalothorax and abdomen) in 100 mg L-1. The growth in length was greater (p < 0.05) in water with hardness of 200 and 300 mg L-1. The weight growth was similar (p > 0.05) between treatments. The highest survival (> 94.4 %) was maintained in water with hardness up to 300 mg L-1 and the lowest survival (77.8 %) was at 400 mg L-1. The total hardness of 200 and 300 mg L-1 is suitable for prawn farming, but hardness high or lower than this range affects the molting, growth and survival due to deficiency or excess of accumulated calcium, respectively, in the prawn exoskeleton.
- Leptodactylus vastos (LEPTODACTYLIDAE) PREDATION ON AN ENDEMIC FROG, AND A COMPILATION OF ITS DIETel marzo 28, 2024 a las 6:01 pm
Despite the amount of data acquired in the last years, much remains to be known specially for geographically widespread species. Here we compiled the available dietary items of Leptodactylus vastus and report the first predation event upon Rupirana cardosoi by a juvenile L. vastus. The fact these species are syntopic in the region probably resulted in this novel predation event. Different from previous L. vastus predation observations, the specimens we observed do not present a striking difference in body size, but L. vastus was able to almost swallow L. cardosoi, coherent with findings that mouth size is related to prey selection in anurans. Also, our literature review showed that L. vastus is a generalist and opportunistic predator, that prey upon small vertebrates (Amphibia, Squamata, and Mammalia).
- Saurochory in crocodiles does not favor seed dispersai and viabilityel marzo 28, 2024 a las 6:01 pm
We evaluate whether saurochory by Crocodylus acutus and C. moreletii affect the seed viability of three species of plants (Delonix regia, Inga sp., and Citrullus lanatus). We performed feeding trials, using three juvenile individuals of each species of crocodile, and fed them 22 seeds per plant species for a total of 66 seeds per enclosure (132 for both species). Seeds were combined with the usual diet each week. The unconsumed and excreted seeds were collected and planted in soil treated with compost to evaluate the relative germination rate. A total of 99 seeds were consumed, of which only 14 seeds of C. lanatus were recovered from the faeces, and only one of those germinated (7.14 %) with respect to 50 % in the control group. The results indicate that saurochory by C. acutus and C. moreletii has a negative effect on seed viability and germination of the plant species studied, as found in other studies using different species.
