What will Welcome to Derry Season 2 be about?
The series expands the universe of Derry with a bold concept that tells the story in reverse, exploring the different cycles in which terror has shaped the town. The narrative moves backward in time, covering 1962 in the first season, 1935 in the second, and 1908 in a third installment, all aimed at revealing how the legend of Pennywise was built.
While it had been widely speculated, HBO has now made it official: this new chapter is set in 1935 and centers on a violent episode involving the so-called Bradley Gang. This group of criminals makes a stop in Derry to gather supplies during their journey—but what starts as a routine move quickly turns into a living nightmare that leaves a lasting mark on the town’s history.
One of the biggest changes this season brings is its setting. The story unfolds during the Great Depression, a period that completely reshapes the familiar atmosphere of the saga. So far, neither HBO nor the show’s creators have revealed who will join the cast for the new season. The only confirmed return is Bill Skarsgård as the iconic demonic clown, Pennywise.
What happened in the final episode of It: Welcome to Derry?
The season finale opens with Derry shrouded in a thick, suffocating fog, a clear sign of Pennywise’s return. His awakening is neither natural nor planned: when the army destroys part of the crystal that keeps him trapped beneath the town, it disrupts a force that was meant to remain untouched. That mistake reactivates the entity, which no longer feels the need to stay hidden.
The consequences are immediate and brutal. Pennywise storms into the town’s school, turning it into a scene of pure horror. Some children are killed, while others fall under the influence of the Deadlights, completely losing their free will. Once they realize the clown is behind the tragedy, Lily, Ronnie, and Marge decide to confront him without waiting for help. They carry the dagger forged from a fragment of the meteorite, an artifact that is as powerful as it is dangerous.
The three follow Pennywise as he leads his victims in a twisted procession toward the place where it all began: the tree marked by the meteorite’s impact. At the same time, Hanlon joins his wife, Dick Halloran, and Rose, accompanied by her nephew, with the goal of finding Will and stopping the creature.
Using his abilities, Dick discovers that the girls are already close to the final confrontation, but he also senses an unexpected danger: the dagger not only harms Pennywise, it also emotionally corrupts whoever wields it. When they finally reach the clown, they find Will suspended and completely controlled by the Deadlights. Pennywise attacks and manages to separate Marge, who is forced to face a shocking revelation no one saw coming: she will be the mother of Richie Tozier! Just as It is about to kill Marge, Dick manages to block Pennywise from inside his mind, freeing the children and restoring their consciousness. The army breaks in and releases the clown, but the group manages to bury the dagger again just seconds before he escapes the boundaries of the cage holding him captive, forcing him to retreat and finally close his feeding cycle… for another 27 years.
To the delight of fans, the finale includes a post-credits scene featuring Ingrid Kersh inside a psychiatric hospital. The scene jumps forward 26 years (one year before It awakens again), and Ingrid is now an elderly woman… the same one who appears in It Chapter Two.
Ingrid hears screams and sobbing and steps out of her room in the psychiatric facility to see what is happening. In another room, she discovers that one of the patients has taken her own life. Her husband and daughter cry as the woman hangs from a bedsheet. Suddenly, the teenager turns around, revealing the face of Beverly, another member of the Losers’ Club from the It films. Now everything is connected. What will happen to the protagonists? Will the events from the movies be revisited? We’ll find out in the second season of the series.
