Will grocery stores be open on Labor Day 2026?

Stores such as Sam’s Club, Walmart, Publix, Trader Joe’s, Meijer, and other major chains will remain open today. That said, some locations may operate on modified hours, so it’s best to check whether your nearest store will be operating as usual.
Costco is an exception, as its warehouses will remain closed for the holiday.
Will restaurants be open on Labor Day 2026?
The holiday will not mean a widespread closure of major restaurant chains either. Restaurants such as McDonald’s, Starbucks, Chipotle, Chick-fil-A, Dunkin’, and Wendy’s are among the options that will remain available to customers.

To date, there is no consensus on who the true founder of this day is, although records point to two possible candidates.
On one hand, it is said that in 1882, Peter J. McGuire, then General Secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, proposed establishing a general holiday for the working class. His intention was to honor those who, through hard work and dedication, have shaped the greatness we admire today.
On the other hand, some attribute the creation of the holiday to machinist Matthew Maguire, rather than to Peter McGuire.
