Psychometric properties and factorial invariance of the TEOSQ-EF in adolescents according to sport participation and sex

The assessment of achievement goals in Physical Education requires valid instruments that demonstrate measurement equivalence across groups defined by sports participation and sex. This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the TEOSQ-9EF and its factorial invariance across sports participation and sex among Mexican adolescents. An instrumental study was conducted using non-probability convenience sampling. Participants were 471 Mexican secondary school students, including 193 boys (41%) and 278 girls (59%), aged 12–16 years (M = 13.25, SD = 0.96). Of the total sample, 242 students (51.4%) did not participate in sports, whereas 229 (48.6%) were involved in sports. Data was collected using the TEOSQ-9EF. Confirmatory factor analyses, multigroup measurement invariance analyses, and latent mean analyses were conducted. The results yielded a refined model, the TEOSQ-8EF, which showed strong psychometric properties, including good model fit (CFI = .984, TLI = .975, RMSEA = .068), adequate factor loadings, and strong internal consistency. Furthermore, the TEOSQ-8EF demonstrated measurement invariance across students with and without sports participation and across boys and girls. In conclusion, the TEOSQ-8EF showed adequate psychometric properties for assessing achievement goals among Mexican secondary school students in Physical Education and demonstrated measurement equivalence across both grouping variables examined.
