History of Tenerife
Club Deportivo Tenerife was founded on August 8, 1922, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in Spain’s Canary Islands. Its creation stemmed from an effort to establish an organization that would represent soccer on the island and compete in national competitions.
The club emerged as the successor to Tenerife Sporting Club, a team that had folded after facing financial difficulties. Under the presidency of Mario García Cames, the new organization began its sporting journey wearing blue and white.
During its early years, Tenerife competed in regional tournaments and worked to establish its sporting structure. In 1925, it opened its own soccer ground, an important milestone in the club’s development.
Over the following decades, the club made its way into Spain’s top divisions. One of its most successful periods came during the 1990s, when it competed in La Liga and qualified for European tournaments.
Among its most memorable achievements was reaching the semifinals of the UEFA Cup during the 1996-97 season. In that campaign, Tenerife eliminated several prominent European teams before being knocked out by Schalke 04.
The Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium, located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, serves as the club’s home ground and remains one of its most recognizable symbols. Throughout its history, the team has moved between Spain’s first and second divisions, as well as competing in lower tiers of Spanish soccer.
