As we age, our bodies get less efficient at replacing tissue lost during normal wear and tear. This is especially true for muscle protein, which results in a loss of muscle mass. A randomized placebo-controlled trial published in May of 2026 in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition set out to see if increasing protein intake, supplementing with potassium bicarbonate (a base to lower acidity), or a combination of the two would slow muscle mass loss and/or improve performance in healthy older adults.
